Utica, NY (2-13-12) – The Utica College men's basketball team looks to earn its third straight win on Saturday at home against Ithaca College as the Pioneers wrap up the 2011-2012 campaign.
Tip-Off: The game will be held at the Clark Athletic Center on Saturday February 18th and is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
The Pioneers: UC is coming off of a big victory last Saturday at Elmira College, one in which they overcame a deficit of 13 points with just 12 minutes left in the game. The comeback win lifted the Pioneers to a 9-16 overall record with 5 of those wins and 8 of those losses coming in conference play.
Sophomore Sensation: Sophomore
Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) won his 2nd straight Empire 8 Rookie of the Week after two strong showings last weekend against Alfred College and Elmira College. Jeffers posted a double-double Friday in a Pioneer victory against Alfred scoring 15 points and bringing down 18 rebounds. He followed that up with 11 points and 5 rebounds Saturday in the Pioneers' second consecutive victory over Elmira.
The Bombers: Ithaca, who has a record of 11-13 overall with a conference record of 8-5, is coming off of a win last Saturday at Alfred which secured them a spot in the Empire 8 tournament. The Bombers are lead by 6'6” sophomore Frank Mitchell, who is averaging 16.8 points, and 7.3 rebounds points per game.
A Final Farewell: The Pioneers will say goodbye to three seniors Saturday against Ithaca.
George Schultz (Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Memorial),
Marlon Davidson (Jamaica, NY/August Martin), and
Reggie German (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) will step on the court for the final time for the Pioneers as they take on the visiting Bombers. The three seniors combined for 16 points per game this season for the Pioneers. Schultz has recorded 168 career points in four seasons for UC. His sophomore year, he netted a career-high 90 points on the season. Davidson currently has 98 career points and holds a .758 free throw percentage in 53 games played for the Pioneers. German is averaging 10.8 points and 5.4 assists per game this season. In his 28 career games played, he has registered 259 points.
UC looks to close the 2011-2012 campaign with its third straight victory, which would get the team to double digits in wins for the second straight season.
