Oswego, NY -- The Utica College men's lacrosse team snapped a two game winning streak after a 13-7 loss at undefeated Oswego State on Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers' were led by junior
Trent Thomas (Akwesasne, ONT/Massena)' two goals and two assists, while junior
Justin Edelstein (Hartsdale, NY/Harvey School) and senior
Oliver Barney (Vestal, NY/Vestal) each added a pair of goals.
UC (4-2) returns from its four game road trip on Saturday when it squares off against Kings College in a non conference contest at 1 p.m. Oswego, led by Casey Balzer's four goal outburst, improved to 5-0 overall and continued to turn heads in the Division III men's lacrosse world.
The Pioneers trailed by a mere three goals, 7-4, after 30 minutes of play, but the home team outscored Utica 6-3 in the second half on its way to a six goal victory.
UC was able to jump out to a 3-2 lead in the first ten minutes of the contest behind goals from junior
Ben Winkler (Rodman, NY/IHC), Thomas and Barney. Oswego answered before the end of the first quarter to knot the score at 3-3 after 15 full minutes of action.
The Lakers surged out of the gates in the second quarter, scoring three consecutive goals, to take a 6-3 advantage that they would not surrender.
Barney and Thomas each netted third quarter goals and the Pioneers found themselves down by just three, 9-6, with 2:13 left before the fourth quarter. Unfortunately the Lakers were able to rattle off three straight goals once again, as they posted an insurmountable 12-6 lead early in the final stanza.
The Pioneers surrendered five man-up goals on ten penalties and they were outshot 56-30 on the afternoon. They earned a 38-34 ground ball advantage and they also won 13-of-24 face-off opportunities.
Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy) and
Zachary Menapace (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) each registered one assist for the visitors. Barney won 9-of-17 face-offs and added a team-high six ground balls. Baron chipped in with five ground balls, while UC goalie
Joe Davis (Vestal, NY/Vestal) stopped 18 shots in his second loss of the young season.
