Utica, NY -- The Utica College baseball team dropped a pair of contests against visiting Oswego State in the home-opener for the Pioneers at the UC Baseball Field on Wednesday afternoon. Utica rallied from an early 6-0 hole in game one, scoring four runs in the final four innings, but it proved to be too late as the Pioneers dropped the first of two games, 8-5.
The Lakers controlled game two from the onset as they opened up an 11-3 lead before the
game was called due to darkness in the top of the seventh inning of play. All statistics were reverted to the last full inning of play (sixth inning) as the Lakers earned the convincing eight run victory.
Junior
Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) continued his hot streak the dish, going 4-for-7 with three RBI on the afternoon, while freshman
Vincent Burillo (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central ) went 3-for-6 over the course of both games for Utica. The Pioneers overall record fell to 1-13 and the Lakers improved their overall record to 7-9. John Rauseo went 3-for-4 with six RBIs and three runs scored in game two, while Matt Miller went 4-for-7 with three RBIs and three runs on the day.
Game One – Oswego 8, Utica 5 – Final
Oswego jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first two innings of game one to put the Pioneers in an early hole. Back-to-back doubles by
Tyler Young (Latham, NY/Hudson Valley) and Dunbar helped UC score its first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Laker lead to 6-1. Oswego answered right back in the top of the fourth inning when Brian Hamilton tripled to right center and Miller drove him home with a sacrifice fly to give the visitors a 7-1 advantage.
UC scored its second run of the day in the bottom of the fourth inning after freshman catcher
Thomas Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas ) drove in junior shortstop
Chris Podlucky (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) with an RBI single to cut Oswego's lead to five runs, 7-2.
UC added three more runs in the final two innings but the 7-2 deficit was too much to overcome. Senior
Ted Krueger (Franklinville, NY/Franklinville) tallied an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth and Dunbar hit and RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to close out the scoring on the evening.
Freshman
Stephen Szatko (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit Valley) scattered three hits and one run over the course of 2.1 innings of work on the mound for UC, while sophomore
Austin Williams (Clyde, NY/Clyde Savannah) did not allow a run in one full inning of work.
Game Two – Oswego 11, Utica 3 (6 innings) – Final
Game two was all Oswego as the visitors jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first three innigns and never looked back. Dunbar went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Podlucky went 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI for Utica.
A Dunbar single in the bottom of the first inning scored Young to cut the Oswego lead to 5-1
after one full inning of play. Utica scored its only other two runs of the contest in the bottom fo the fifth inning when Podlucky singled and scored
Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) before Dunbar tripled to scored Podlucky in the next at-bat.
Senior hurler
Matt Zitt (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) pitched five full innings for Utica and struck out one, while Brady Farkas, Jon Silva and Michael Putillo each threw two innings and combined for the victory in the nightcap.
Rauseo totaled an incredible six RBIs in game two and shortstop Tyler Baker went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday when they travel to St. John Fisher College to open up Empire 8 Conference play against the Cardinals at 1 p.m.
