Utica, NY (4-17-12) – The Utica College baseball team will host a double header against neighboring rival SUNY Institute of Technology Wednesday afternoon.

First Pitch:  The games will be held at the Utica College Baseball Field with game one set to start at 2 p.m.

The Pioneers:  UC is currently 4-20 overall while 1-7 in the Empire 8 Conference…  After winning 3-of-5 to start the month, Utica has fell upon hard times losing three straight to Ithaca this past weekend. 

No. 16's Bat: Junior first baseman Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) is currently leading the UC offense in just about every category… Dunbar is first in average (.341), hits (29), RBI (22), triples (four), doubles (four) and slugging percentage (.518).

AC Steady Starting:  Sophomore Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) is the only Pioneer to start all 26 games this season… Six of those starts have come on the hill while registering 37.0 innings and two complete games… He is 1-3 with a 3.89 ERA and a team-high 30 strikeouts… At the plate, Choleva is batting .280 while leading the squad in runs (15) and at bats (93)… He is also second in hits (26), RBI (11), triples (three) and stolen bases (six).

Zapata for Everyday DH: Junior Angel Zapata (Bronx, NY/Bronx Center for Science and Math) is making a case for the everyday designated hitter as he went off last weekend against the Bombers going 4-for-9 with five RBI…  Zapata is currently batting .286 (10-for-35) with seven RBI.

Getting to Know the Wildcats: SUNYIT presently holds a 9-19 overall record including a 6-4 mark in the NEAC… After winning eight straight earlier this month, the Wildcats dropped four games to Penn St.-Abington and Penn St. -Berks this past weekend…  Junior Chandler Evans currently leads the Wildcat offense with a .355 batting average while senior Anthony Surber is second batting .340 at the dish.

Around the League:  Ithaca sits atop the Empire 8 Conference with an 8-1 record while going 18-5-1 overall… St. John Fisher currently maintains a 4-4 record in the E8 while posting an 18-8 overall record in second place…  Stevens (4-5, 18-12 overall) currently occupies third with Utica trailing in the fourth spot.

Back on the Field: The Pioneers head to Hoboken, NJ this weekend for a three-game set against Stevens Institute of Technology… UC took 1-of-3 from the Ducks last week in Utica as they won game two, 10-9 (8 innings)… Stevens is currently 18-12 overall while holding a 4-5 mark in the E8.
