Fisher Tops Utica in High Scoring Affair

Utica, NY (4-29-12) - The Utica College baseball team lost Sunday, 28-5, to St. John Fisher in Empire 8 play at the Utica College Baseball Field.  Senior Dan Bittel (New Hartford, CT/Northwestern Region) led the Pioneers with two hits and one run scored.

Fisher scored four runs in its first at bat on five hits to take an early 4-0 lead.  UC answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning on three hits.  Freshman Nick Perkins (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) walked and eventually scored on a Fisher error.

In the second inning, the Cardinals came out and added two more runs on three hits to push to a 6-1 advantage.  UC retaliated with three runs on four hits and one Fisher error to cut the lead to two, 6-4.  Perkins and junior Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) added RBI hits for Utica. 

However, the visitors were relentless as they went on to outscore the Pioneers 22-1 over the next seven innings.

Sophomore Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) got the loss on the hill as he fell to 3-4 on the season.  Senior Ted Krueger (Franklinville, NY/Franklinville), sophomore Rob Heath (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) and freshman Benjamin Hobaica (Clinton, NY/Clinton) each added a hit and one run scored for UC.

UC is now 8-26 overall including a 2-12 mark in the E8 while St. John Fisher moves its overall record to 27-8 on the season and 11-4 in conference play.  Utica hits the road for its final five contests starting Wednesday against Keuka College.  The doubleheader will be held in Keuka Park, NY and set to start at 2 p.m.
