Pioneers Take Two From Keuka in Non-Conference Action

Keuka, NY – The Utica College baseball team traveled to Keuka College on Wednesday and swept the Storm in non conference

action.  The Pioneers won game one 15-7 and came back to complete the sweep by taking down the Storm 10-4 in the night cap.  Sophomore Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) went 4-for-8 with a team-high seven RBIs, including his second home run of the year, while junior Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) went 4-for-8 with six RBIs, four runs scored and two home runs.

The Pioneers improved to 10-26 overall and they have now won four of their last seven games headed into their final weekend series of the season at Ithaca College on Saturday and Sunday.

Senior Matt Zitt (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) and junior Sean McNeil (Riverside, NJ/) each picked up a win on the mound for the Pioneers, while Rob Heath (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) went 3-for-8 at the dish with four RBIs. 

Utica 15, Keuka 7 – Game One Final

The Pioneers registered ten runs between the fifth and sixth innings to pull away in game one.  Dunbar opened up the scoring with his third home run of the year to give UC a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning of play.  The Pioneers went on to tack on three more runs in the next two innings to take an early 4-0 lead.  Choleva hit a two-RBI single in the third to put the Pioneers on top by four. 

UC scored five runs on four hits and two errors in the fifth inning to take a 9-1 lead.  Cholevas' two-run home run sparked the Pioneers big fifth inning.  After allowing four runs in the bottom half of the fifth the Pioneers fought right back with five more runs in the top of the sixth to essentially seal the victory.  UC's big sixth inning was sparked by Dunbar's second home run of the day and fourth of the season.

the season for UC while striking out five.  Freshman Nick Perkins (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while junior Angel Zapata (Bronx, NY/Bronx Center for Science and Math) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI.  Senior Ted Krueger (Franklinville, NY/Franklinville) added a 2-for-4 performance with two RBIs. 

Utica 10, Keuka 4 – Game Two Final

UC jumped out to a quick 7-2 victory in game two and the Pioneers never looked back. UC used three hits and one error to score four runs in the first inning, before turning right back around to notch three runs on one hit and one error in the second inning. 

Heath and Krueger each posted RBIs in the top of the fifth and Heath added his second RBI of the game in the seventh inning to lift the Pioneers to a six run victory. 

Senior hurler Matt Zitt (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) picked up the victory for the Pioneers as he struck out three in four full innings of work.  James Richards (Rome, NY/Holland Patent), Dylan Leggett (Milton, VT/Milton High School) and senior Chris Podlucky (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) combined to pitch the final two innings of shutout ball.    

Dunbar continued his hot streak by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored in game two, while Choleva was no different as he posted three RBIs on two hits.  Rob Heath (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and junior shortstop Chris Podlucky (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) added a one hit and one RBI.
