Pioneers Fall Short Against Ithaca Baseball

Ithaca, NY (5-6-12) – The Utica College baseball team concluded its season on the road Sunday losing two close games, 2-1 and 4-0, to regional power Ithaca College. Senior Ted Krueger (Franklinville, NY/Franklinville) led the Pioneers with two hits, one RBI and one stolen base.

Game One
Utica opened up the scoring in the third inning when junior Tyler Young (Latham, NY/Hudson Valley) hit a lead off triple down the right field line.  Next, Krueger singled on a bunt, to drive in Young.

Ithaca rebounded in the bottom of the inning when junior Corey Caswell doubled to right center.  He then advanced to third on a wild pitch, before senior Mike Rosenbaum hit an RBI single to left field.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh inning when senior Matt Keller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, to drive in the winning run. 

Sophomore Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) struck out six in 6.2 innings of work, while his counterpart, Pat Lemmo had seven strikeouts in as many innings. 

Game Two
Ithaca jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when sophomore Tim Locastro hit a lead off double to right field.  Next, Mike Rosenbaum singled to advance Locastro to third.  Then, Matt Keller hit an RBI single to right center, as Locastro scored.  Senior Teagen Barresi rounded out the scoring as he singled to drive in Rosenbaum.

The Bombers scored again in the third inning as Rosenbaum singled.  He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, before being drove home when Keller hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

Ithaca capped off the scoring in the seventh when Rosenbaum hit an RBI double to drive in Locastro. 

Junior Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) paced the Pioneers going 2-for-3.  Junior Sean McNeil (Riverside, NJ/) gave up seven hits and two earned runs in 4.2 innings, while James Richards (Rome, NY/Holland Patent), Donato Traditi (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington), and Matt Zitt (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) gave up just two hits and one run in 3.1 innings combined.

UC finished the season 10-29 overall while 2-15 in the competitive Empire 8 Conference.  The Bombers won the E8 Conference title with an impressive 14-4 mark in league play and are currently 26-8-1 overall.
