Utica, N.Y. (9/13/12)- The Utica College women's soccer team looks to capture its first ever victory over its non-conference rivals Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers, Friday night at 7:30 on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. UC remains undefeated this season after four games and a win over the Engineers would improve their overall record to 5-0.
SPOHLER LEADS HER TEAM: Senior forward
Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY/Cairo Durham) currently leads her team with nine points on 26 shots and one assist. Spohler scored in all four victories for the Pioneers this season including two separate game winning goals against SUNY IT and Oswego State; Spohler also scored the only goal in UC's 1-0 win against The College at Old Westbury.
SOUTHWELL INVALUABLE: Junior forward
Sarah Southwell (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) is turning in a solid performance this season with four points on 14 shots and two assists in four games. The Rome, N.Y. native has kicked her game into over-drive since the 2010 season moving from eighth to second place in scoring for her team.
SMITH'S PLAY NETTING HONORS: Junior goalie
Caitlyn Smith (Waterville, NY/Madison) is having a sensational season amassing a total of 18 saves; including a season high 11 saves against Oswego State in last week's 2-1 victory over the Lakers. Her efforts have been recognized by being named Empire 8 Conference Defensive Player of the Week, on Monday 9/10/12
MATTHEWS PITCHING IN: Junior midfielder
Samantha Matthews (Valley Falls, NY/Tamarac) is contributing to the success of the Pioneers with her first goal of the season against Cobleskill in week one, and one assist a piece in games against Old Westbury and SUNY-IT.
FREEMAN-ROCHE: Junior defenseman
Quinn Freeman-Roche (Putnam Valley, NY/Ursuline) also contributed to the Pioneer's win over Cobleskill with a goal in the 78th minute.
AGAINST RPI: These two teams have met three times over the past four years, 2008, 2010 and 2011, with the Pioneers falling to defeat in each meeting. The last time they met in 2011, UC suffered a 3-0 shutout to the Engineers. With Utica presently outshooting their opponents 9-1 combined with the 2-2 season of RPI, the Pioneers hope to break the non-winning streak this Friday night.
