Utica, NY (9/16/12)- The Utica College women's soccer team got back on track, Sunday, as it downed SUNY Potsdam 4-1 at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  Four different Pioneers scored in the win.

Utica opened up scoring in the ninth minute as senior Jaime Hillman (Hornell, NY/Hornell) netted her first goal of the season off a pass from Samantha Matthews (Valley Falls, NY/Tamarac).  Matthews sent a corner kick into the box and Hillman fired it home to put the Pioneers up 1-0.

Just over three minutes later, senior Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY/Cairo Durham) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to put Utica up by two.  Spohler received a pass from Sarah Southwell (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) at midfield.  She ran in and fired a hard shot from 25 yards out.  Potsdam goalie Jaime Durant got a piece of it, but it ended up in the back of the net.

The Pioneers scored again in the 79th minute as Southwell netted a goal of her own.  Alexandria Newton (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) played a long ball to Southwell.  She collected it at midfield and ran in on a breakaway.  After making the goalie commit, she ran to the right and tapped a shot into the empty net.

Four minutes later, senior Katie Stolz tallied her first of the season to cap off the Pioneer scoring.  Junior Deanna Didio (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) ran down the right side and fired a ball towards the far post, just out of reach of Durant.  Stolz was able to direct the ball in to put UC up 4-0.
Potsdam was able to cut the lead with just three minutes to play as junior Ashley Thayer scored her team-best third goal of the year off a Jess Sterns corner kick.

Junior Caitlyn Smith (Waterville, NY/Madison) had 12 saves for Utica, while Durant made five saves in net for Potsdam.
The Pioneers return to action Wednesday, as they host D'Youville College for a non-conference contest.  Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
