Utica, NY (9/4/12)- The Utica College women's soccer team looks to continue its win streak Wednesday, as it travels across town to local rival SUNYIT.
UC (2-0) is fresh off a weekend sweep against SUNY Cobleskill and Old Westbury at the Erinn K. Brozman Cup hosted by Hartwick College last weekend.
On Saturday, UC had a convincing 4-0 win over Cobleskill. Senior standout
Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY/Cairo Durham) scored the game winner for Utica in the 36th minute. The Pioneers also received goals from juniors
Sarah Southwell (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy),
Samantha Matthews (Valley Falls, NY/Tamarac), and
Quinn Freeman-Roche (Putnam Valley, NY/Ursuline). Junior transfer
Caitlyn Smith (Waterville, NY/Madison) had one save in her UC debut. On Sunday, Utica downed Old Westbury 1-0 behind a goal from Spohler in the 74th minute, while Smith made three stops for the Pioneers.
The Wildcats (1-1) are coming off a weekend split at the Alfred University Tournament. On Saturday, SUNYIT lost to host Alfred University, 3-1. On Sunday, they rebounded with a 5-2 win over Sage. The Wildcats are led by junior Stephanie Wurz and backstopped by classmate Aubrey Campbell. Wurz has three goals through two games so far this season, while Campbell has compiled eight saves in 180 minutes of work.
Following Wednesday's contest, the Pioneers kick off their home season as they host Oswego State at 7:30 p.m. on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
