UC Women's Soccer Blanks Third Straight Opponent

Marcy, NY (9/5/12 ) – The Utica College women's soccer team shut out its third straight opponent as it blanked SUNYIT 2-0 Wednesday night in Marcy, NY.  Senior Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY/Cairo Durham) netted the game-winning goal for the Pioneers.

Spohler put home a dish from junior Sarah Southwell (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) at 13:58 in the first half to give UC a 1-0 lead and the eventual victory. Utica out shot SUNYIT 7-4 in the first half and 14-7 on the evening.

After 60 plus minutes of play, UC netted an insurance goal as junior Alexandria Newton (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) found the back of the net at 75:25 off a feed from freshman Krystine Alvear (Ossining, NY/Ossining). Newton and Alvear hooked up for their first points of their collegiate careers on the play.

Pioneer goalie junior Caitlyn Smith (Waterville, NY/Madison) stopped all three shots to move to a perfect 3-0 on the season with all wins coming in shut out fashion.  Smith now has seven saves while allowing no goals in her first year campaign as a Pioneer.

The Pioneers remain undefeated at 3-0 overall while the Wildcats fall to 1-2 on the season.  UC returns to its home turf Friday night as it welcomes Oswego State for a non-conference contest.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
