Women's Soccer Set for Home Opener Friday Night

The Pioneers have yet to give up a goal this season
Utica, NY (9/7/12)- The Utica College women's soccer team opens up home play, Friday, as it hosts Oswego State at 7:30 p.m.  The Pioneers are currently 3-0 and have yet to concede a goal.

Last Time Out: Utica is coming off a 2-0 win at local rival SUNY IT, Wednesday... Senior Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY/Cairo Durham) and Junior Alexandria Newton (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) scored for the Pioneers, while junior Caitlyn Smith (Waterville, NY/Madison) made three saves in her third consecutive shutout.

Players to Watch: Utica is once again led by Senior Samantha Spohler (East Durham, NY/Cairo Durham)... The forward has registered a team-high six points through three games so far...  Junior Sarah Southwell (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) is second on the team with four points (one goal, two assists)...  Junior transfer Caitlyn Smith (Waterville, NY/Madison) has made an immediate impact on the team...  Smith has collected seven saves and has yet to allow a goal in 270 minutes of work.

Scouting Oswego: The Lakers are currently 2-0 and are coming off back-to-back wins against St. Joseph's (3-2) and Fairleigh Dickinson University (2-0)...  Oswego is led by senior Shelly Bateman and sophomore Bri Dolan...  Bateman has a team-best five points on two goals and one assist, while Dolan has netted two goals...  The Lakers were 11-8 overall and 2-7 in the SUNYAC and captured the ECAC Upstate title last season...  The first time the two teams met was on Sept. 10 last year when Oswego defeated the Pioneers 2-1.

Looking Ahead: The Pioneers continue their six-game home stretch next Saturday as they host RPI.  Game time is scheduled for 12 p.m. on the Utica College grass soccer field.
