Utica, NY (9/8/12)- The Utica College field hockey team exploded for eight goals as it cruised past visiting Morrisville State, Saturday. Junior
Jessica Franklin (Delevan, NY/Pioneer) and sophomores
Alaina Stojkovski (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) and
Chasity Eckert (Afton, NY/Afton Central) each netted two goals to pace the Pioneers.
UC got on the board just under four minutes into the game as sophomore
Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) scored her team-high fourth goal of the season. Stojkovski had a long shot from the arc that Mackey knocked down and fired into the goal to put the Pioneers up 1-0.
Just three minutes later, classmate
Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) scored a goal of her own. Steele- Norton found a loose ball in front of the net and drove a low shot passed Morrisville goalie, Nicole Gregg.
The Pioneers tallied another score at the 13-minute mark as Stojkovski picked up a loose ball and registered her first goal of the season.
Less than a minute later, senior
Allee Straub (Granville, NY/Granville) connected with Eckert to put the Pioneers up 4-0. Straub played a nice ball through a defender to Eckert who blistered a shot past Gregg.
UC closed out the first half scoring, at 33:20 as Straub drove down the right side. Just above the end line, she sent a ball on net that Franklin tipped inside the left post.
The second half was more UC domination as Stojkovski netted her second goal of the game. Mackey fired a hard shot on goal that Gregg could not control. The rebound popped out to Stojkovski who put the ball in the open net.
Franklin tallied her second of the day off an assist from freshman
Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport). Dowling crossed a ball to the left side of the net, where Franklin stood unmarked and easily tapped in Utica's seventh goal of the game.
The Mustangs got on the board in the 61st minute as Kissandra Blaiser scored her first goal of the game off an assist from Ilze Stots. After Utica goalie
Samantha Miller (Charlottesville, VA/Charlottesville High) stopped two Morrisville shots, including one from Stots, Blaiser gathered a loose ball and put it in the right corner.
Eckert capped off the scoring three minutes later as she scored on a breakaway. She collected a ball twenty yards out and ran in uncontested. After a nice move to get by Gregg, she slid the ball into the empty net.
Sophomore
Olivia Cunningham (Bethlehem, NH/Profile), junior
Samantha Miller (Charlottesville, VA/Charlottesville High) and freshman
Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) all registered time in net for the Pioneers. Cunningham, the day's starter earned the win for UC after playing the first half. Miller took over and stopped two of the three shots she faced in 28:30 minutes of work. Casey did not face a shot in her 6:30 in goal. For Morrisville, Gregg turned away 20 shots in the loss.
Utica returns to action Wednesday as it hosts cross-town rival, Hamilton College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
