Utica 5, Chatham 0 - Women's Hockey Final
Utica, NY (1/25/2013) – The Utica College women's ice hockey team extended its six game unbeaten streak after a convincing 5-0 win over visiting Chatham University in game one of a two game ECAC Women's West Conference set on Friday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Junior forward
Vanessa Maines (Boxborough, MA/Boston Jr. Shamrocks) scored a season-high two goals, while junior goalie
Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) stopped 13 shots in her seventh win and third shutout of the season. Hamel has now allowed just one goal in her last three starts. As a team, the Pioneers have allowed just four goals in their last six games and they have tallied two shutouts over the stretch.
The Pioneers improved to 9-6-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the highly competitive ECAC Women's West Conference. Chatham dropped its seventh straight contest as its record moved to 1-14 overall and 0-11 in conference play.
The Pioneers got on the board early in the contest with two goals in the first five minutes of action. Junior forward
Vanessa Maines (Boxborough, MA/Boston Jr. Shamrocks) netted her second goal of the season just 1:35 into the contest, before
Kelsey Dowdall (Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean) added a power-play tally at the 4:18 marker. Junior
Meredith Tice (Hershey, PA/Washington Pride) assisted on both of the goals, while
Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) and
Meghan McMahon (Gardner, MA/St. Marks (MA)) also registered helpers.
Three second period goals essentially sealed the victory for the Pioneers. Maines added her second of the night to open up the second period scoring, while McMahon and junior
Caitlyn Moccaldi (Clinton, NY/Clinton High School Boys) added an even strength tally late in the period to put UC on top 5-0.
UC outshot Chatham 53-13 on the afternoon and won 40-of-59 face-offs. Utica is now 20-0-1 all-time against the Cougars.
Megan Buchanan tallied 48 saves in net for the Cougars.
The Pioneers turn right back around to complete the season series on Saturday afternoon against the Cougars.
