Women's Hockey Runs Win Streak to Five with Sweep of Buff State

Morgan Reed (14) and Caitlin Moccaldi (10) each had a goal for the Pioneers
Box Score Utica, NY (12/1/13)- The Utica College women's hockey team won its fifth straight contest as it downed visiting Buffalo State 5-1 Sunday afternoon to complete the ECAC West Conference sweep over the Bengals. Four different players scored for the Pioneers en route to their fourth straight conference victory.

UC controlled most of the play in the opening frame, out shooting the visitors 19-6 through the first 20 minutes and holding a 3-0 lead on the scoreboard. Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) tallied her third of the year, and then assisted on a shorthanded goal by Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) to give UC a two-goal cushion. Senior Caitlin Moccaldi chipped in with her first of the year to take Utica into the first intermission up 3-0.

Neither team scored again until the third period as Myers netted her team-best sixth goal of the season, once again assisted by Reed. The Bengals were able to sneak one passed Utica goalie Marissa McNamara (Camillus, NY/Lysander Lightning) to spoil the shutout as Kara Goodwin tallied her third of the year, unassisted. The Pioneers capped off the scoring as sophomore Mackenzie Roy (Clinton, NY/Clinton) netted her first collegiate goal to seal the victory.

Nicole Schwartz (Danville, CA/San Jose Sharks), Vanessa Maines (Boxborough, MA/Boston Jr. Shamrocks), Kelsey Dowdall (Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean) and Victoria Pelton (Sterling Heights, MI/Belle Tire) each had one assist on the day, while McNamara made 18 saves in her first collegiate start. Jordan Lee had 44 saves in net for Buff State. Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects) has now recorded at least one point in each of the Pioneers' seven games this season.

UC (5-2, 4-2 ECAC West) returns to action Friday, Dec. 6 as it takes on Hamilton College in the Pioneers' annual gold ribbon game for childhood cancer awareness. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. at the Clinton Arena.
