UC Women's Basketball Faces Final Test Before Break

Utica, NY (12/9/13)- The Utica College women's basketball team goes in search of its third straight win to close out the fall semester as it takes on Union College Tuesday evening at the Harold T. Clark Gymnasium. The contest will begin at 6 p.m.

Last Time Out: Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) had her fourth straight double-double(13 points, 16 rebounds) to lead the Pioneers past host SUNYIT, 71-56... Freshman Kelsey Cowell (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) ripped down 15 boards, and also had nine points and three steals for Utica.

Crashing the Glass: Greenwald is the top rebounder in the Empire 8 conference, hauling down 13.8 rebounds per game.

Miceli Does it All: In her second season, Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) has continued to show off her versatility as a guard... She leads the team in scoring (15.4 points per game) and three point field goal percentage (34.7%).

Handing out Presents: Utica will have to cut down on the turnovers to win on Tuesday... The Pioneers rank last in the Empire 8 conference in turnover margin at -5.20 per game... They also rank last in assist to turnover ratio with a .620 mark... Making those statistics even more prevalent is the fact that Utica ranks third in the conference in assists per game.

Hello, Kelsey: Freshman Kelsey Cowell (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) got her first two collegiate starts last week against SUNYIT and MCLA, and did not disappoint... Cowell had a team-high 17 points in a 68-49 win over MCLA, and tacked on 12 rebounds for her first career double-double... She also had nine points and 16 boards in a win over SUNYIT.

There Goes the Neighborhood: The most local player on the roster, Adriana Surprenant (Utica, NY/New York Mills), has played in the last three games for Utica, and is averaging five points over that span... Surprenant played her high school basketball just a stone's throw down Burrstone Road at New York Mills.

About Union: The Dutchwomen are 5-1, and are a perfect 5-0 away from home… Amy Loya leads the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game, and point guard Kelsey McDonald can dish with the best of them by averaging 4.2 assists per game.

Going Dutch: Union employs a balanced attack, and it is not uncommon to see significant balance in minutes and scoring across the roster… Loya is the only Union player to average more than 10 points per game… Eleven players are in regular rotation, which showcases strong depth on a team that has not beaten any of its opponents by more than ten points this season.

That's all for Now, Folks: Utica will not see the competitive hardwood again until after the break, when the Pioneers open E8 play at Stevens on January 3rd.
