Buffalo, NY (2/9/13)- The Utica College women's hockey team continued its strong play as it defeated host Buffalo State, 4-0 in ECAC West Conference action, Saturday afternoon. Junior Meghan Myers netted two goals and an assist and senior
Meghan McMahon (Gardner, MA/St. Marks (MA)) posted a season-high three assists to lead the Pioneers.
Senior
Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride) opened the scoring at 8:05 of the first period as she netted her sixth tally of the season. McMahon and Myers assisted on the goal.
Sophomore
Kelsey Dowdall (Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean) extended the lead at 10:24 of the second as she found the back of the net. Classmate
Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) assisted on Dowdall's fifth of the year.
Myers took over in the third period as she netted her team-leading 13th and 14th goals of the year. The junior forward netted her first of the game at 14:30 of the final period off an assist from McMahon. Then, just three minutes later, she added an empty netter to seal the victory. McMahon and Johnson assisted on the final tally.
Utica improved upon its nation-leading penalty kill, by shutting down the Bengals on six man advantages on the day. UC has now killed 100-of-107 power plays.
Buffalo State's Jordan Lee made 29 saves in the loss, while senior
Marissa Hotaling (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) stopped all 23 shots she faced in net for UC for her third shutout of the season. The Pioneers improve to 12-7-2 on the season and 9-4-2 in the conference, while Buff State drops to 5-16-1 (2-11 ECAC West).
Both teams return to action tomorrow to wrap up the series. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m.
