UC Men's Lax Falls Short in Empire 8 Opener Against Naz

Rochester, NY (3/27/2013) – After trailing 10-3 in the third quarter, the Utica College men's lacrosse rallied with five consecutive goals, but it was not enough, as host Nazareth closed the contest with four unanswered tallies to earn a 14-8 Empire 8 Conference victory on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Pioneers (3-3, 0-1 Empire 8) will return to action, looking to snap a two game slide, on Friday night when they take on visiting Misericordia in non-conference play at Gaetano Stadium at 4 p.m.

Utica senior Justin Edelstein (Hartsdale, NY/Harvey School) netted two goals and added one assist, while freshman Corey Thompson (Akwesasne/Salmon River) also chipped in with two goals of his own.  David Craig (Brewerton, NY/Paul V. Moore) and Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy) each registered one goal and one assist for the Pioneers, while Ben Winkler (Rodman, NY/IHC) and Andrew Jamieson (Six Nations, ON/Hagersville) added a goal apiece. Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) stopped 18 shots in net for Utica.

The first quarter was a bit of a chess match as the two E8 foes felt each other out.  They each exchanged one goal in the opening 6:22 of the contest, but Naz (6-3, 1-0 Empire 8) earned the edge by scoring two goals, in a span of just seven seconds, late in the first quarter. 

The Golden Flyers extended their lead to 8-2 at the half by outscoring Utica 5-1 in the second 15 minute stretch.

UC would not go down with our a fight as the Pioneers netted the opening goal of the second half, and went on to outscore the home team 5-2 in the third quarter, including four consecutive goals to close out the third, trailing 10-7.

Edelstein scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter to pull the Pioneers with in two goals, 10-8, but that's when Naz came back to life.  The Golden Flyers closed out the final 13 minutes of the contest with four unanswered goals to earn the six goal victory.

Naz was led by three goals from Troy Haefele, and two goals apiece from Collin Clark, Kyle Fanning, Chris Aycock and Luke Wooters.

Dan Duffy (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) and Sean Flannagan each recorded three caused turnovers for UC, while Winkler posted four ground balls.

The Golden Flyers outshot the Pioneers 42-35 on the afternoon.
