UC Women's Lax Heads to Skidmore to Face Thoroughbreds

Utica, NY (3-6-13) – The Utica College women's lacrosse team looks to make it two-straight Wednesday as it heads to Saratoga Springs, NY to challenge non-conference rival Skidmore College.

Opening-Day Masquerade: Five different Pioneers scored at least two goals Saturday in the season home-opener as UC cruised to a 20-1 victory against visiting Houghton College at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium ...  Freshman Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) got her collegiate career off on the right foot with four goals and one assist, while sophomore Morgan DuPont (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) added a career-best seven points on three goals and a team-high four assists … DuPont's four assists is tied for second on the College's single-game list.

Belanger Named E8 Goalie of the Week: Senior Stephanie Belanger (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston) opened up her senior campaign with a solid performance between the pipes and was rewarded with Empire 8 Conference Goalie of the Week honors … Belanger saved four shots for UC as it earned its first win of the 2013 campaign defeating Houghton … She stopped four of the Highlanders five shots, compiling a save percentage of 80% while scooping up six groundballs in the Pioneers victory.

UC Statistic Report: DuPont currently leads the squad in scoring (seven points), groundballs (four) and caused turnovers (three) after her impressive opening day performance … Sophomore Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) and freshman Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) lead the team in goals (four) and are second in points with five each … Wheeler also has two groundballs and two caused turnovers so far … Freshman Briana Estabrook (Tully, NY/Tully ) and sophomore Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) each have two goals while freshman Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport), freshman Mary Morgan Marafino (Monroe, NY/Central Square), junior Julia Primps (Ossining, NY/Ossining), senior Lauren Gilmore (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) and junior Lindsey Gelles (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) netted one apiece.

Quick Facts: The Pioneers, who have won by 18 goals on six different occasions since the program's inception back in 2001, set a new school-record for margin of victory with Saturday's 19-point win … UC looks to open up the season with back-to-back wins for the first time in program history … Utica is in search of its first 10+ win season in 2013 … The program posted its most wins (nine) in a season back in 2008 during Coach St. Hilaire's inaugural season where the squad finished 9-8 including a first-round  ECAC victory.

Back to the Friendly Confines: Following Wednesday's contest, UC returns to its home turf for back-to-back non-conference games against SUNY Potsdam and The Sage Colleges … Utica welcomes Potsdam on Saturday, Mar. 9th (1 p.m.) and then The Sage Colleges on Wednesday, Mar. 13th (4 p.m.) … Both games will be held at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium on the Utica College campus … Potsdam and Sage both kick off their season on Wednesday.
