Softball Picks up Big Empire 8 Sweep Over League-Leader St. John Fisher

Sophomore Courtney Fitzgerald hit a walk-off grand slam in the first game
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Utica, NY (4/14/13)- The bats came alive as the Utica College softball team picked up two huge Empire 8 Conference victories over visiting St. John Fisher College, 6-2 and 8-2, on Sunday afternoon at Greenman Field.  UC used five home runs on the day to down the Cardinals.

Utica 6, St. John Fisher 2- Game One Final
Facing a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh, junior Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) doubled to bring home Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) for the trying run.  Then, with the bases loaded, sophomore Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) blasted a grand slam over the left field wall to give UC the walk off victory.

Traglia and Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) were each 2-for-3, while Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) also had a hit in the opening contest.  Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) struck out five in her complete game win, while Fisher's Sarah Stefanon fanned nine batters.

Utica 8, St. John Fisher 2- Game Two Final
The Pioneers picked up where they left off as senior Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) crushed a two-run shot in the bottom of the first.  Fisher bounced back in the top of the third as Sarah Fordyce, hit a two-run homer of her own. UC tallied one run each in the third and fifth innings to regain the lead.

Utica added insurance in the sixth as freshman Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) and junior Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) hit back-to-back two-run shots to extend the lead.  Smith's knock was her first collegiate homer, while Monroe's was her second of the game and sixth of the season.

Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) allowed just two runs in four innings, before classmate Erica Colucci (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) stepped in to shut the door.  Colucci struck out four and allowed just one runner on base in the final three innings for the Pioneers.

UC improves to 16-8 on the year and 5-3 in the conference, while Fisher drops to 17-11 and 6-4 in the Empire 8.  This was the first time Utica has beaten the Cardinals since 2006 and only the fourth win over Fisher in the last ten years.

The Pioneers return to action Wednesday as they travel to the University of Rochester.  The non-conference contest is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
