Marcy, NY (4-17-13) – Seniors
Angel Zapata (Bronx, NY/Bronx Center for Science and Math),
Chris Podlucky (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and
Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) combined for nine hits (three each) Wednesday afternoon as the Utica College baseball team split a twilight doubleheader across town with local rival SUNY Institute of Technology. UC took game one, 5-3, before losing game two, 6-0.
The Pioneers currently hold a 2-14 overall record and are back in action Friday as they prepare for a long awaited home-opener. Utica kicks off a six-game home stretch as it welcomes Houghton College for four games. First-pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday at the Utica College Baseball Field. SUNY is now 9-15 overall on the season and remains home to welcome Cazenovia College Saturday for an afternoon set in Marcy, NY.
Utica 5, SUNYIT 3 – Game One Final
UC got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning off the help of a SUNY throwing error to take a mere 1-0 lead. Then, after two scoreless innings, the Pioneers added to their lead with two scores in the top of the fifth on two hits and another Wildcat mishap. The home team would match UC over the next two innings of play however could not convert a late comeback as UC went on the win the first bout.
The senior trio proved tough in game one accounting for 5-of-7 Pioneer hits, three runs scored and two RBI. Dunbar tallied two RBI, while Podlucky and Zapata added two hits apiece and combined for three runs scored.

Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) fired five innings, fanning three for his first win of the season while freshman
Ronald Mannella (Albion, NY/Albion) grabbed the two-inning save for UC.
SUNYIT 6, Utica 0 – Game Two Final
After two quiet innings of play, the Wildcats opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third with four runs on three hits. SUNY posted back-to-back hits to ease a 1-0 edge before the help of a Utica wild pitch, error and passed ball which aided a 4-0 cushion and the eventual victory for the home team. IT tallied another insurance run in the fourth and sixth to seal the split.
Sophomore
Stephen Szatko (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit Valley) was tagged with the loss after tossing four innings and allowing four runs on four hits. Freshman
Joshua Webb (Verona, NY/VVS) and sophomore
Christopher Wotten (Blackstock, Ontario/Cartwright) closed out the contest each allowing one run and striking out two. Webb threw 2.2 innings and gave up four hits while Wotten concluded the final inning of work allowing one hit. SUNY's Michael Rose garnered his first win of the season with a complete game shutout, despite letting up eight base knocks.
UC is set to host back-to-back doubleheaders against the Highlanders on Friday and Saturday before greeting Keuka College for a twilight pair next Wednesday, April 27th.
