UC Sweeps Stevens; Clinches First Ever Empire 8 Regular Season Title

Uc will host the Empire 8 Tournament for the first time in program history
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Utica, NY (4/21/13)- Seniors Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) and Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) along with cleanup hitter sophomore Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) combined for 12 runs and eight runs batted in Sunday to lead the Utica College softball team to its first ever Empire 8 Conference regular-season title. UC's 3-4-5 hitters posted an impressive 13-for-20 day, including four home runs, as it shut down Stevens Institute Technology, 10-2 and 15-0, convincingly. Junior Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) worked her league leading 13th win of the season in game two and now sits atop the E8 standings in wins with a 13-4 record.

Utica 10, Stevens 2- Game One Final

Utica jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back as it cruised to a 10-2 victory over the visiting Ducks.  Seniors Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) and Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) and sophomore Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) led the way with two hits each, while Fitzgerald and Plummer had one home run apiece.  Junior Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) also had a homer, her league-leading ninth of the year.

The Pioneers also picked up hits from Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville), Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford), Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central), and Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk). Sophomore Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) struck out three to move to 7-1 on the year.

Utica 15, Stevens 0- Game Two Final

UC exploded for nine runs in the first inning and went on to score six more over the next three frames to pick up its most lopsided victory of the season.

Senior Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) and sophomore Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) each went 3-for-4, while Fitzgerald also had a home run.  Senior Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) was 2-for-4 with one homer and two runs scored.  Senior Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) and freshman Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) each had two hits and Taylor Ellis (Willet, NY/Greene), Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk), Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown), Alex Deyo (Schenectady, NY/Colonie Central), Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central), and Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) also had hits.

Freshman Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed just three runners on base to pick up her 13th win of the season.

The Pioneers will host the Empire 8 Conference Tournament on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4.  Utica will take on fourth seeded Alfred University, which won the tie-breaker against Ithaca College to squeak into the tournament.  The other game will pit No. 2 Elmira vs. No. 3 St. John Fisher.  The rest of the tournament will follow the schedule below:

Game 1: No. 2 Elmira v No. 3 Fisher - 10am
Game 2: No. 4 Alfred s No. 1 Utica - Noon
Game 3: Loser Game 1 v Loser of Game 2- 2pm
Game 4: Winner of Game 1 v Winner of Game 2 - 4pm

Saturday, May 4?
Game 5: Winner of Game 3 v Loser of Game 4 – 11 a.m.
Game 6: Winner of Game 4 v Winner of Game 5 - 1 p.m.

UC still has six non-conference home games left.  The Pioneers return to action Wednesday as they host RPI.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
