Hoboken, NJ (4-27-13) – The Utica College baseball team lost an evening doubleheader Saturday to host Stevens Institute of Technology, under the lights of De Baum Field, losing 5-4 (8 innings) in game one and falling 10-2 in the second game. Senior
Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) guided the Pioneers with three hits, two RBI and one run scored including a triple and one stolen base.
UC falls to 4-20 overall this season including a 0-7 mark in the Empire 8 Conference and returns to the diamond Sunday for another pair against the Ducks. Stevens moved its overall record to 21-16 while 4-6 in conference play. First-pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m. at the De Baum Sports Complex.
Stevens 5, Utica 4 (8 Innings) - Game One
After two quiet innings of scoreless action, the home team struck first with two runs in the third and another in the third, both on two hit at bats.
The Pioneers responded quickly over the next two innings with four runs to take a slight one run lead, 4-3, headed into the final inning. UC used a big fifth inning to tie the game up 3-3 as senior
Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) led off with a triple and immediately scored on a fielder's choice. Utica tagged two more runs on one hit and the aid of a wild pitch to knot the contest up.
Utica came right back in the top of the sixth with the go head run after back-to-back singles by sophomores
Vincent Burillo (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central ) and
Thomas Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas ). Burillo eventually crossed the dish on a senior
Angel Zapata (Bronx, NY/Bronx Center for Science and Math) base knock up the middle.
The lead was short lived however as UC lost another heartbreaker giving up the tying run in the seventh and the game-winner on a walk-off sacrifice in the eighth.
Junior
Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) tossed a solid seven innings allowing four runs while fanning five Ducks in the start. Freshman
Joseph Horning (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie) took over in the final inning and was tagged with the loss after hitting the first two batters and allowing the game-winner on a sac-fly.
Dunbar and Zapata each tallied two hits and one run scored to pace Utica in game one.
Stevens 10, Utica 2 – Game Two
The home squad jumped out to a commanding 8-0 advantage in its first two at bats as it knocked out UC's starting pitcher freshman
Joshua Webb (Verona, NY/VVS) after being tagged with eight runs on six hits and two walks, early in game two.
Utica got on the board in the top of the fourth with two runs off the wood of senior
Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville). The first baseman ripped a double to right center field scoring Burillo, who walked the at bat before, and classmate
Tyler Young (Latham, NY/Hudson Valley), who led off the inning with a single, to cut the lead to six, 8-2.
Stevens tacked on two more insurance runs in the fifth en route to the game two win and the day one sweep.
Duck's starter Gary Boardman recorded the win allowing just two hits and two runs scored while striking out seven Pioneers.
