Canton, NY (4-30-13) – Seniors Chris Podlucky (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and Nick Dunbar (Granville, NY/Granville) guided the Utica College baseball team to a midweek split against SUNY-Canton Wednesday as the duo combined for three hits, three RBI and two runs scored.  UC took game one 6-1 before falling short in the second game, 4-2.  Podlucky and Dunbar drove in three runs on a mirror 2-for-3 at the plate while sophomore Vincent Burillo (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central ) aided three hits including a double, one run, one RBI and one stolen base in the game one victory.  Freshman Joshua Webb (Verona, NY/VVS) recorded his first collegiate win on the mound with a complete game, one-run outing.

The Pioneers move to 5-23 overall and return home for back-to-back nine-inning games Thursday against Union College (4 p.m.) and then Saturday versus John Jay College of Criminal Justice (12 p.m.). Both games will be held at the Utica College Baseball Field.  The Kangaroos wrap up their season with a 13-23 overall record.

Utica 6, Canton 1 - Game One

The home team got on the board first with one run, on one hit in its first at bat following a leadoff walk, two groundouts and a clutch two-out single.  After two quiet at bats, by both squads, Utica came to life with four runs in the top of the third on three hits and the help of a Canton error.

Senior Tyler Young (Latham, NY/Hudson Valley) reached base on an error by the pitcher to start the inning and scored the tying run off the bat of a Burillo rope to left field.  Two batters later, Dunbar cracked a two-run double down the left field line to push UC to a 3-1 lead before freshman Matthew DeMartino (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) continued his surge at the dish with an RBI single to cap the four run rally with a 4-1 Pioneer edge. UC chipped in with two more insurance runs in the sixth and seventh en route to sealing its fifth win of the season.

Junior Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) posted a 2-for-4 game in the leadoff spot with one run, one RBI and one stolen bag while sophomore catcher Thomas Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas ) crossed the plate twice in the win.

Webb tossed an impressive seven innings in his first win on the college scene while striking out three of the hosts and allowing just one run.

Canton 4, Utica 2 – Game Two

After three innings of scoreless action in the second game, UC opened up the top of the fourth with two runs on two hits to take a 2-0 lead.  Dunbar and Podlucky tallied back-to-back singles to spark the rally andeventually scored on a sacrifice fly and a ground out.

However, the Roos answered with consecutive one run tallies over the next two at bats to knot up the contest, 2-2, before scoring two more runs in the sixth for the eventual twlight split.

Canton's hurler Travis Legacy shutdown Utica to close out the win as he allowed just three base runners over the next three innings while allowing a zero in the hit and run column for his team leading fifth win of the season.

Dunbar and Podlucky registered two of UC's three hits while scoring the teams only two runs in the loss.  Sophomore second baseman Benjamin Hobaica (Clinton, NY/Clinton) posted the Pioneers other lone hit while snagging two bases in game two.

Sophomore starter Stephen Szatko (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit Valley) fanned five Kangaroos while allowing two hits and no runs in 2.1 innings of work on the mound.  Junior Ronald Mannella (Albion, NY/Albion) followed with 2.2 innings of effort allowing two runs on two hits before senior Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) was tagged with the loss in the final frame.  Jeffers falls to 2-6 on the hill as he allowed two scores on one base knock.
