Box Score 2 Marcy, NY (5/1/13)- The Utica College softball team capped off its incredible regular season as it swept cross-town opponent SUNYIT by scores of 7-2 and 10-0 Wednesday afternoon.
Utica 7, SUNYIT 2- Game One Final
The Pioneers rebounded from a 1-0 deficit early in the game by scoring seven straight runs to grab the victory. Sophomore
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker),
Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany), and
Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) were each 2-for-4 in game one to lead the team.
Sophomore
Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) blasted a two-run home run in the fifth inning to pick up her 10th homer of the year, tying the school record for home runs in a single season.
Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) and
Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) also added one hit each and freshman
Erica Colucci (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) struck out three and allowed just one earned run through six innings of work to move to 5-1 on the season.
Utica 10, SUNYIT 0- Game Two Final
Ten different players recorded at least one hit as the Pioneers cruised to an 10-0 victory in game two.
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker),
Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central), and
Taylor Ellis (Willet, NY/Greene) were each 2-for-3, while Matan racked up four runs scored and three RBI.
Utica also had hits from
Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown),
Bridgette Plummer (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville),
Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany),
Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) (two),
Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central),
Alex Deyo (Schenectady, NY/Colonie Central), and
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk).
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) had another solid day pitching for UC as she allowed just three hits for her second straight shutout as she moves to 9-1 on the season.
The Pioneers wrap up regular season play with one of their best records in program history (30-10). UC will return to action Friday as it hosts the Empire 8 Conference Tournament. Utica will kick off tournament play as it faces Alfred at 12 p.m.
