UC Advances Into Winners Bracket with 8-0 Win Over Alfred

Utica College 8, Alfred University 0 (6 Inn.) - Empire 8 Conference Softball Tournament

Utica, NY (5/3/2013) – The top-seeded Utica College softball team defeated fourth-seeded and visiting Alfred University 8-0 (six innings) in game two of the Empire 8 Conference Softball Tournament at Greenman Field on Friday.  Freshman pitcher Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) threw her first collegiate no-hitter for the Pioneers, while freshman Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) went 2-for-3 with a team-best three RBI's.  The Pioneers tied the school-record for wins in a single season with 31 and will advance into the winner's bracket where they will take on St. John Fisher College in game four on Friday afternoon.

After three scoreless innings, the Pioneers broke open the contest in the bottom of the fourth with one run, before tacking on five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to essentially seal the victory.   Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central)'s two-RBI double in the fifth inning sparked the Pioneer rally before Cassie Smith (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) wrapped up the five run inning with a two-RBI single of her own. 

Junior Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) added an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Pioneers a 7-0 lead. Matan went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI for the Pioneers, while Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) added a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs. Senior Dominique Carcone (Frankfort, NY/New Hartford) went 3-for-3 on the day and added one run scored. 

Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) struck out two, walked one batter and the Pioneers made just one error on the afternoon.  Monroe now has 17 wins this season.  Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central), Mallory Ingalls (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) and Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) each added a hit for UC. 

Alfred hurler Katelyn Jacobsenpitched 4.2 innings for Alfred and allowed nine hits. 

St. John Fisher defeated Elmira 2-0 in 12 innings in the first game of the tournament to advance into the winners bracket.
