Pioneers Cruise to E8 Victory over Naz

Utica, NY (9/28/13)- The Utica College field hockey team used six straight goals to top Nazareth College 6-1 in Empire 8 Conference action Saturday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  Four different players registered multiple points on the day for the Pioneers.

Junior Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) opened the scoring at 7:45 as she netted her team-leading eighth goal of the season, unassisted.  Classmate Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) added two goals in 1:25, both assisted by sophomore Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport), to add to the UC lead. 

The Pioneers carried their momentum into the second half as senior Jessica Franklin (Delevan, NY/Pioneer) found the back of the net for her third of the season.  Franklin controlled a rebound off an Alaina Stojkovski (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) shot and was able to put one passed Nazareth goalie, Shannon Winney.  Just 1:13 later, junior Becki Vivacqua (Yorkville, NY/New York Mills Jr-Sr High) got in on the action as she deflected a ball in out of mid air for her fourth goal of the year.  Mackey assisted on the play.  Sophomore Olivia Plaisted (Hampden, ME/Hampden Academy) capped off the scoring for Utica at 55:24 as she ripped a shot off a pass from Stojkovski on a set piece.

The Golden Flyers were able to get on the board in the 61st minute as Kristina Back put in a rebound off of Jordan Ritchie's shot for her third of the season. 

Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) made four saves in 55 minutes of action, before Olivia Cunningham (Bethlehem, NH/Profile) came in for the final 14:36.  Shannon Winney had seven saves and allowed five goals in 48:56 minutes of work for Naz, before Mary Greco stepped in for the final 21:04.  Greco had one save and allowed one goal in relief. 

The Pioneers improve to 7-2 and 2-0 in the Empire 8, while Nazareth falls to 3-4 (2-1 Empire 8).  UC returns to action Wednesday as it hosts Ithaca College.  The E8 contest is scheduled for begin at 4 p.m.
