Fisher Tops UC in Empire 8 Action

Pittsford, NY (January 18, 2014) – The Utica College women's basketball team lost to host St. John Fisher College 77-63 in Empire 8 Conference e action at Manning Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. UC's Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) added 16 points. Greenwald compiled her seventh double-double of the season and she now averages 11.8 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.

The Pioneers moved their record to 5-10 overall and 0-6 in Empire 8 play. UC returns to the hardwood for the first of three straight home conference games on Friday night when the Pioneers take on Hartwick College at 8 p.m.

Utica's Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) netted 14 points for the Pioneers, while Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) came off the bench and added eight points on 2-of-5 shooting from behind the arc.

Fisher led from the opening tip and did not relinquish the lead the entire contest. The Pioneers did earn 24 offensive rebounds which turned into 23 points.

Fisher made seven of its first eight shots from the floor and led 21-9 just 4:30 into the game. Fisher led 44-33 at the break, thanks to 18 points from Mary Kate Cusack.

Leading 51-37 early in the second half the Cardinals went on a 13-0 run over the next two minutes, capped off by a McKenzie Bezon 3-pointer, to take command of the game.

Gabby LaForce scored a layup at the 8:33 mark to give Fisher a 73-43 advantage, which would prove to be Fisher's largest lead of the game.
Cusack finished with 21 points, a career-best six assists and five steals. Camaryn Buckner played just 15 minutes after getting into foul trouble but managed to register 15 points and seven rebounds. Portia Velasco added 12 points, three assists and two steals for the Cardinals.

With the win, Fisher improves to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in the Empire 8
