Box Score Utica, NY (1-25-14) – The Utica College men's basketball team lost its fourth straight Saturday to Empire 8 rival Stevens Institute of Technology, 92-67, at the Clark Athletic Center. Senior forward
Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) netted 14 points and added seven rebounds, while
Marion Lewis (Bronx, NY/Lehman) came off the bench and score 12 points for UC. Big man
Marty Felicia (Phoenix, NY/Phoenix) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Pioneers.
UC falls to 6-11 overall including a 1-7 mark in the Empire 8 and return to the court Friday as they welcome Alfred University for the final game of a three game home stand. Stevens moves their record to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in league play. The Ducks have now won four consecutive, three in E8 play, and also return to the hardwood Friday as they open up a stretch of three straight in Hoboken, NJ starting against St. John Fisher. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. for both games on Friday.
Stevens opened the contest on a 16-4 run behind nine early points from Patrick Sabatino. Kenny Gan also registered six points in the opening 5:51 of the game. UC answered with a 10-3 run of its own in a span of 2:19 behind eight points from
Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) to help cut their deficit to 19-14 at the 11:50 mark of the first half. UC was a perfect 4-for-4 in the stretch, including a 2-for-2 showing from 3-point range.
In the next 9:41 of the half the Ducks used a 24-8 run to open up a 43-22 lead with 2:09 to go in the first half. Evan Klimchak and Sabatino combined for 13 points in the run. UC went 3-for-18 from the floor in the pivotal stretch and turned the ball over seven times. Stevens held the 20 point lead for the remainder of the first half and took a 49-29 lead into the locker room.
Stevens opened the second half on a 22-9 run in the first 9:16 to take a convincing 68-38 lead with 11:09 to go in the game. Phillip DeSeignora netted nine points in the stretch and the Ducks converted on 4-of-9 3-pointers in the run.
Stevens would not let down in the second half and earned its largest lead of the contest (33 points) as the score was set at 80-47 with 6:26 to go. Utica outscored the visitors 14-8 in the final 4:11 of the game but it proved to be too late as the Ducks earned the 25 point win.
Five different players scored in double figures for the Ducks including Patrick Sabatino (21), Phillip DeSeignora (16), Evan Klimchak (12), Michael Signer (11) and Kenny Gan (10). Matt Skrelja added eight poitns and eight rebounds.
