ONEONTA, NY (1-4-13) – The Utica College men's basketball team dropped it second straight Empire 8 game in as many days, 92-77, to Hartwick College Saturday at the Lambros Arena. Junior
Aaron Nevins (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) led the Pioneers with 25 points on 8-of-22 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the free throw line.
UC is now 5-5 overall including an 0-2 mark in Empire 8 action and returns home Tuesday as it welcomes cross-town rival SUNYIT for the first of a three-game home stand. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center. Hartwick improved its overall record to 6-5 while 2-0 in conference play and returns to the hardwood Friday Jan. 10th as it welcomes St. John Fisher to Lambros for a 6 p.m. start.
The home team worked a ten point lead over the first eight minutes of play to take a 22-12 lead at 11:59 and would continue its push into the break. UC pulled to within six points, 31-25, at 5:06 before the home Hawks used a 14-6 run to close out the first 20 minutes with a 14-point cushion, 45-31.
Wick came out in the second half right where they left off pushing to a 19 point lead, 58-39, just five minutes into second half play. UC used a 20-7 spurt to cut the deficit to six, 65-59, at 9:16 but would run out of steam as the Hawks closed out the afternoon with a 27-18 push en route to victory.
Utica's
Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) added 15 points, nine boards, three assists and three steals while
Marion Lewis (Bronx, NY/Lehman) chipped in with 11 points, four rebounds and two dishes in the loss.
Hartwick's Kyle Bradley and Jared Suderley both posted double-doubles to guide the Hawks as Bradley had a game-high 31 points to go along with 10 boards and Suderley with a game-high 16 rebounds along with 11 points.
