Washington, PA (10/18/14)- The Utica College field hockey team maintained its spot atop the Empire 8 Conference standings as it downed host Washington & Jefferson College, 5-2, Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers move to 13-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in the Empire 8 with a 7-0 record in the conference. Utica stretches its win streak to 11 games headed into a huge contest at nationally-ranked No. 15 University of Rochester on Wednesday (6 p.m.).
Senior
Hannah Mackey (Locke, NY/Moravia Central) stretched her goal-scoring streak to 11 games as she netted her conference-leading 29th goal of the season, while classmate
Louise Steele-Norton (Avondale, PA/Millbrook School) led the Pioneers with two goals on the day. Senior
Alaina Stojkovski (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) netted her fourth goal in as many games and junior
Colleen Dowling (Fairport, NY/Fairport) added her sixth of the year to pace the Pioneers.
Utica never trailed in the game as the Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half behind goals from Mackey and Steele-Norton. The Presidents got one back at 47:25, but Steele-Norton and Stojkovski scored 68 seconds apart and Dowling added another tally just two minutes later off an assist from
Nikki Kieffer (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) to all but seal the victory.
Junior
Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) had five saves on the day, while W&J's Morgan Brozena had ten saves in the loss.
