Potsdam, NY (10/17/14)- The Utica College volleyball team lost a five-set heartbreaker to Plattsburgh State Friday night on the opening game of the Clarkson Tournament.
The Cardinals took the first two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-21 before the Pioneers battled back to win the next sets 25-21 and 25-15 forcing the fifth and deciding set. Plattsburgh was able to swing the momentum in the final set to take the 3-2 victory.
Freshman
Samantha Hoerning (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) led the Pioneers with a career-high 11 kills while
Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) had eight kills and
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) totaled seven kills on the evening. Five players registered at least ten kills on the evening, including
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury),
Nichole Sears (Boonville, NY/Adirondack),
Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent),
Chelsea Lauria (Erieville, NY/Cazenovia), and
Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville). Allen also added a team-high 29 assists.
The Pioneers fall to 8-17 on the year. They return to action Saturday to take on SUNY Canton (10 a.m.) and Clarkson University (12 p.m.).
