Women's Basketball Takes on Oneonta in Home Opener Tuesday Night

Utica, NY – The Utica College women's basketball team will host SUNY Oneonta Tuesday night in the Pioneers 2014-15 home-opener. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT: The Pioneers opened up their season with a 65-54 win over SUNY Potsdam … UC trailed Potsdam 31-26 going into the half, following the break, Utica outscored Potsdam by 16 to take home the win… The Pioneers had three players score double digits as Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) led the way with 19, Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) netted 12, and Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) put in 11… Greenwald also added 14 boards to earn the double-double

HOME OPENER: The game against Oneonta will be Utica's first home game of the season … In the past ten seasons the Pioneers are 4-6 in their first home game … In the four wins two were against Potsdam, one was against Southern Vermont, and the other was against Centenary College … In the six losses four came against Hamilton, one against Potsdam, and another against Oneonta … In the last ten years, Utica's best start was in the 2006-07 season when the Pioneers started 3-0.

CHASING HISTORY: Senior Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) has 590 career rebounds for Utica … She needs 73 rebounds to surpass Meghan Fiore for sixth on the College's all-time list … Greenwald needs 110 more rebounds to become just the fifth player in program history to collect at least 700 rebounds … Junior Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) ranks seventh in program history for 3-point field goals made… Miceli has 86 career 3-pointers made … She needs six more to surpass Laura Keating's career mark of 91… Miceli needs 14 more 3-pointers to become one of six players in program history to have at least 100 made 3-pointers.

SCORING MACHINE: Senior Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) led the Pioneers with 19 points and shot .571% from the field on Saturday… Her 19 points ranks her third in the Empire 8 … Last year, Stayer averaged 12.8 points per game (second most on the team) ... She also recorded 25 assists, 18 steals, and five blocks … She had a career-high 30 points against Houghton (2/11/14) last season.

TOP REBOUNDER: Against Potsdam, Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) pulled down nine offensive and five defensive rebounds for a total of 14 boards … Greenwald had 11 points on the day and is already averaging a double-double on the season … Last year Greenwald was one of two-players in the Empire 8 to average a double-double as she had 10.8 points and 11.6 rebounds… She led the conference in rebounding and was ranked 25th nationally … She also had 57 assists, 33 steals, and six blocks last season.

OFF THE BENCH: Amanda Henderson (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) picked up her first collegiate points as she netted seven points in 14 minutes of action against SUNY Potsdam … She was a perfect 5-5 from the line and added three steals … Henderson also picked up two rebounds and an assist in her first collegiate game.

SCOUTING THE RED DRAGONS: Oneonta lost its season opener to the University of Rochester 65-56 … The Red Dragons were led by Caysea Cohen with 17 points; she added five assists and four steals in 37 minutes of action … Sarah Longto led Oneonta with ten rebounds and pitched in with ten points... Last year, Oneonta went 18-8 overall and was 8-4 on the road.

LAST TIME AGAINST ONEONTA: UC and Oneonta squared off last year at Dewar Arena, with the Red Dragons won 59-43 … Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) was UC's top scorer with 14 points, Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) had 11 points and nine rebounds … Oneonta was led by Alyshia Crawford with 18 points and she added four steals and four assists.

NEXT TIME OUT: The Pioneers will hit the road on Wednesday to take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a non-conference game. The game is set start at 6 p.m.
