Alfred, NY (2-14-14) – The Utica College men's basketball team lost to host Alfred University, 116-94, Friday night in Empire 8 Conference action at the McLane Center. Six Pioneers scored in double-digits led by freshman
Ian Henderson (Chateaugay, NY/Chateaugay)'s game-high 15 points on 5-of-8 from downtown.
UC falls to 7-15 overall including a 1-11 mark in the E8 and is right back in action Saturday as it heads to Ithaca College for another conference contest. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at the Ben Light Gymnasium. The Saxons move to 17-5 on the season with an 8-3 ledger in league play and remain home Saturday when they welcome St. John Fisher for a 2 p.m. set tip-off.
The first half featured 15 lead changes and seven ties. UC led 38-37 with 5:13 left to play before the break. It was then that the home Saxons began to pull away as they used a 21-10 run pushing to a 12 point advantage, 60-48.
In the second half, Alfred shot 48.9% from the floor compared to UC's 39.4% which proved big as the Saxons put home a 22 point victory. Utica missed 15 free throws in the contest shooting 62.5% on 25-of-40.
Utica's
Marion Lewis (Bronx, NY/Lehman) and
Marty Felicia (Phoenix, NY/Phoenix) combined for 24 points (12 each) and 10 rebounds while
Aaron Nevins (Buffalo, NY/Canisius),
Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) and
Mark Felicia (Phoenix, NY/Phoenix) each netted 10 in the loss.
Six players scored in double-digits for Alfred including Tyler Seelman's team-high14 point effort. The Saxons played 17 players in the game with 15 of them tallying points in the victory.
Alfred revenged last season's sweep by the Pioneers with two victories of its own in 2014. UC is 1-8 away from home this season and has dropped seven of its last eight.
Following Saturday's contest at Ithaca (6-17, 1-11 Empire 8), the Pioneers will wrap up the regular season with back-to-back games at home where they are 4-6 on the season. UC defeated the Bombers earlier this season by 14 points, 87-73, on Jan. 11th at the Clark Athletic Center.
Utica will face Nazareth (15-7, 7-4 Empire 8) on Friday, Feb. 21st before their home finale on Saturday, Feb. 22nd against Houghton (3-19). UC lost to Naz by nine points, 93-84, in Rochester, NY and before beating Houghton by nine, 90-81, at home.
