Utica, NY (March 10, 2014) – The Utica College men's lacrosse team will travel to nearby Hamilton College for the 4
th Annual "Contineer Cup" on Tuesday afternoon. The rivalry game was dubbed the Contineer Cup back in 2011 and the Continentals have retained the cup each season since its inception. Tuesday's contest begins at 4 p.m. at Steuben Field.
Rescheduled: Tuesday's game was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday but it was moved up one day to avoid the forecasted snow that is expected to make its return to Central New York.
Unblemished: The Pioneers are starting the season off 2-0 for the sixth time in program-history … UC opened the season with two consecutive ten goal victories over SUNYIT (14-4) and Manhattanville (16-6) … The Pioneers have started the season 3-0 just four times in school-history and their best start ever came back in 2004 when they opened the season 4-0.
Last Time Out: (March 8, 2014) - Sophomore attack
Trent Jacobs totaled a career-best six points on four goals and two assists as the Pioneers topped Manhattanville College 16-6 at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Saturday … Seven different Pioneers scored at least two points, including
Corey Thompson (Akwesasne/Salmon River),
TJ Benson (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) and
Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC), who each netted two goals.Â
All-time vs. Hamilton: The Pioneers have lost 12 straight match ups against the Continentals ... The only time UC beat Hamilton in program-history was back in 2001 when the Pioneers topped the Continentals 10-8, current Head Coach
Mike Parnell was an assistant coach at UC at the time … Two of the contests have been decided in overtime, with Hamilton winning both decisions (2006 & 2012) … Six of the 14 match-ups between these two programs has been decided by two goals or less.Â
Jacobs is Back At It: Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy) recorded nine points in two Pioneer victories last week … On Thursday against SUNY IT, he netted two goals on ten shots and added an assist … In a win over Manhattanville on Saturday, Jacobs lit up the scoreboard with four goals on just six shots and added two assists … On the season, Jacobs is shooting an impressive 37.5% (6-for-16) … Jacobs is currently fourth in the conference in goals per game (3.00) and 11
th in assists per game (1.5) … With nine points in two games, he is third in the E8 in points per game (4.5).
Instant Impact: Junior transfer
Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC) has made an instant impact on the offensive end and he currently ranks second on the team with five goals this season … Freshman
Ross Cree (Akwesasne/Salmon River ) ranks fifth on the team with five points (two goals, three assists) and he is also tied for the team lead with 10 ground balls … He is 8-for-12 in face-off opportunities this year.Â
Senior Leadership: Senior's
Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy) and
TJ Benson (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) have combined for 10 points through two games … Baron is tied for third on the team with four goals, while Benson has three goals and two assists.Â
Thompson Coming on Strong: Sophomore
Corey Thompson (Akwesasne/Salmon River) has four goals in two games this season … He netted two goals in each game (tied for his career-high) … Thompson is the cousin of Miles, Lyle and Ty Thompson, the dynamic trio at the University of Albany that guides one of the most productive offenses in all of Division I lacrosse.
Shut 'Em Down: The Pioneers defense is holding its opponents to just five goals per game this season … The UC defense is led by
Tom Byrne (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster),
Sean Flanagan (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and
Dan Duffy (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) … Byrne has a team-best seven caused turnovers to go along with eight ground balls … Flanagan has five caused turnovers and seven ground balls, while Duffy has four caused turnovers and six ground balls.Â
Goalie By Committee: Four different Pioneers have seen action between the pipes so far this season … Senior
Cory Spisak (Lisle, NY/Tompkins Cortland CC) has allowed just three goals in 51 minutes of work …
Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) has a team-best eight saves as he picked up the victory over Manhattanville Saturday … Freshman
Kobi Johnson (Akwesasne/Salmon River ) made five saves and allowed just one goal in 15 minutes of work against SUNYIT … Freshman
Parker Smith (Dexter, NY/General Brown) stopped two shots and allowed just one goal in his first collegiate appearance against Manhattanville.Â
Hot in the Third Quarter: UC has scored 14 of its 30 goals this season in the third quarter ... The Pioneers seem to be playing their best lacrosse in the 30 minute stretch of the second and third quarters (23-of-30 goals scored).
Home Sweet Home: The Pioneers are currently 2-0 on their home turf this season and they will take the show on the road for the first time all year as they travel to nearby Clinton, NY to take on the Continentals Tuesday.
Domination: The Pioneers have outscored their first two opponents 30-10 and they have outshot their opponents 118-50 … Utica is averaging 59 shots per game … The Pioneers have held their opponents to 1-for-14 on man-up opportunities … UC has also caused 38 turnovers compared to its opponents 13 turnovers.Â
Meet Hamilton: Hamilton is currently 0-3 overall, having played three very tough match ups to open the season … Hamilton lost to NESCAC opponents Wesleyan and Colby by just one goal each and the Continentals also fell to Nazareth College on the road, 16-11 … Nazareth knocked Utica out of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament semifinals last season … Hamilton is led by John Zimmerman who has 13 points on four goals and nine assists … Sam Sweet is tied with Connor Morgan for the team lead with eight goals each.
