Utica, NY (3/22/14) - The Utica College men's lacrosse team used five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter for a 10-7 come-from-behind victory over Hartwick College in Empire 8 action Saturday afternoon.  Eight different players scored for UC.

Hartwick jumped out to a two-goal lead, however goals by Adam Zielenski (Holland Patent, NY/Mohawk Valley CC) and Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy) knotted the score after the first fifteen minutes.  The Hawks pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 5-3 in the quarter to own a 7-5 lead at halftime.

Both teams played an even third quarter, as neither scored a goal, before UC turned up the pressure and netted five straight in the final frame to cruise to victory.  Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC) and Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) each tallied two goals in the final 15 minutes, while freshman Ross Cree (Akwesasne/Salmon River ) also scored to give Utica the 10-7 advantage.

Hartwick threatened in the final 1:41 as UC was assessed three penalties, giving the Hawks a huge three-man advantage.  The Pioneer defense held strong, however as Hartwick was not able to register a shot on goal in the man up opportunity leading Utica to its fourth win and first conference victory of the season.

Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) had six saves in the win, while his counterpart, Michael Rourke had 20 saves in the loss.  Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) had an impressive day for UC, netting one goal and winning 13-of-20 face offs as well as collecting seven ground balls.  Tom Byrne (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) also played well for the Pioneers as he also scooped up seven ground balls and caused three turnovers.  Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy) and Corey Thompson (Akwesasne/Salmon River) also scored for Utica.

The Pioneers (4-2, 1-0 Empire 8) return to action Wednesday as they travel to SUNY Potsdam for a non-conference match up.  Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
