Box Score 2 Ithaca, NY (4-12-14) – The Utica College baseball team dropped a doubleheader Saturday afternoon to Empire 8 rival Ithaca College, on the road, at Freeman Field. UC was victim to a 3-2 walk off loss in the first game before falling, 7-3, in game two. The Pioneers were led by junior
Vincent Burillo (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central ) who tallied a team-best three hits on the day.
Utica falls to 4-10 overall and remains winless in E8 play at 0-4 while the Bombers move to 17-5 on the season and sit atop the league with a 5-1 mark. Both teams are right back on the diamond Sunday for another twin bill at Freeman Field. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
Ithaca 3, Utica 2 – Game OneThe Pioneers got on the board in their first at bat with one run as senior
Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) continued his hot bat smacking an RBI double to left center field scoring junior
Benjamin Hobaica (Clinton, NY/Clinton), who walked.
The two Pioneers worked another score in the third using a double steal to take a 2-0 edge heading into the bottom of the frame. Hobaica singled and advanced to second as Choleva reached on an Ithaca error. After the duo stole second and third, junior
Ryan Watson (Deerfield, NY/Whitesboro) converted a ground out, scoring Hobaica, for UC's second run.
The home team answered with two runs in the fifth to knot up the contest and continued its momentum into its final at bat with a walk off single in the seventh edging game one, 3-2.
Hobaica scored both UC runs along with two stolen bases while Choleva tagged a double and one stolen base.
Joshua Webb (Verona, NY/VVS) allowed three runs in 6.1 innings of work while striking out three and walking five in the loss.
Ithaca 7, Utica 3 – Game TwoIC worked a 3-0 lead over the first four innings while shutting down the Utica lineup with no hits allowing just two base runners on a walk and an error.
The Pioneers broke up the no hitter in the fifth, however weren't able to manufacture any runs until late in the game. Utica pulled within one run of the lead, 3-2, with the work of three hits however could not muster enough offense as the Bombers went on for the afternoon sweep.
Burillo and
Matthew DeMartino (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) combined for 4-of-7 Utica hits in game two. Both went 2-for-4 with Burillo scoring one run and DeMartino driving one in.
Stephen Szatko (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit Valley) was tagged with the game two loss throwing 7.2 innings while giving up eight hits and seven runs.
