Box Score 2 Ithaca, NY (April 13, 2014) – The Utica College baseball team dropped a pair of games at Empire 8 Conference rival Ithaca College on Sunday afternoon at Freeman Field. UC lost game one 10-8 before falling in game two 10-3.
Cam Andrews (Bangor, PA/Bangor) and
Rob Heath (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) both went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, while
Matthew DeMartino (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) was 3-for-7 with two runs scored and one RBI. Junior catcher
Thomas Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas ) tallied two hits, including one home run, and he also added three RBI's and two runs scored. Dinnen leads Utica with 21 hits and four home runs in 16 games played this season.
The Pioneers are now 4-12 overall and 0-6 in Empire 8 play. Ithaca improved to 19-5 overall and 7-1 in the E8. The Pioneers will play six games over the course of four days next week beginning with local rival SUNYIT on Wednesday afternoon at the UC Baseball Field (2 p.m.).
Ithaca 10, Utica 8 – Game One FinalThe Pioneers threatened with four runs in the top of the seventh inning but their rally fell short as they lost to host Ithaca 10-8 in game one. Utica led 3-2 in the top of the third inning after a solo home run by
Thomas Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas ) and RBI doubles from
Benjamin Hobaica (Clinton, NY/Clinton) and
Ryan Watson (Deerfield, NY/Whitesboro).
Ithaca responded by scoring the game's next six runs to take an 8-3 lead in the fourth inning. Watson walked with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, scoring Heath, to make it an 8-4 ball game, but the Bombers answered back with a run in each of the next two innings to take a 10-4 lead headed into the Pioneers final at-bat.
Dinnen, DeMartino,
Eric Rightmier (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) and Heath each posted RBI's in the seventh inning, but the rally was cut short as the Pioneers fell by two runs.
Dinnen finished game one with two this, two RBI's and two runs scored, while Heath was 3-for-4. DeMartino posted a 2-for-4 effort with one RBI and one run scored in the game one loss.
Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) pitched a complete game for the Pioneers, allowing seven earned runs, while striking out two in the loss.
Ithaca 10, Utica 3 – Game Two FinalThe Pioneers led 3-2 in the fifth inning before the Bombers exploded with eight runs between the fifth and eighth innings to earn the seven run victory.
Cam Andrews (Bangor, PA/Bangor) went 3-for-4 with one RBI in game two for Utica, while DeMartino added one hit and one run scored.
Michael Howard (Bronx, NY/John F. Kennedy) and Christopher Wooten also scored for the Pioneers.
Senior
Chris Jeffers (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) started the game on the mound for the Pioneers and allowed six earned runs.
