Box Score Utica, NY (April 16, 2014) – The Utica College men's lacrosse team lost to visiting Stevens Institute of Technology 13-4 in Empire 8 Conference action on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers cut the Stevens lead to three goals on two different occasions in the third quarter, but the Ducks pulled away by outscoring the home team 7-2 in the fourth and final quarter. Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) had another stellar day in net as he stopped 16 shots, marking the sixth time in his last seven outings that he has made 11 or more saves.
Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy) and
Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy) each netted two goals for the Pioneers, while
Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro),
Corey Thompson (Akwesasne/Salmon River),
Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC) and
Ross Cree (Akwesasne/Salmon River ) were each credited with an assist on the afternoon.
UC is now 2-2 in its last four games and the Pioneers record moved to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the Empire 8. Stevens' has won five of its last six games and improved to 6-6 overall and 3-1 in the highly competitive Empire 8.
Charlie Cronin led the Ducks with four goals, while Michael Maroon added two goals and three assists. Sean Scrudato and Colin Sawula each added two goals apiece and Austin Boyd stopped seven shots in net to earn his first win of the year for Stevens.
The Utica defense was staunch in the first half allowing just three goals as the Ducks took a 3-0 advantage at the end of two quarters.
Stevens outscored Utica 3-2 in the third quarter and took a 6-2 lead into the fourth and final stanza.
Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy) scored both of the Pioneer goals in the third. Jacobs is now tied for the team lead with 21 goals this season. Junior transfer
Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC) still leads Utica with 32 points this season (21 goals, 11 assists).
The Ducks began to pull away by netting the first two goals of the fourth quarter and they sealed the victory by scoring five goals in the final 6:44 of action.
Stevens was nearly perfect on clear attempts as it went 15-for-16, and their ten-man ride was particularly effective against the Pioneers, holding UC to 50% (13-of-26) on clear opportunities. Both teams won ten face-offs. Stevens outshot UC 53-19 on the day and the Ducks forced 30 Pioneer' turnovers.
Tom Byrne (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and
Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) each pulled in a team-high five ground balls for Utica.
The Pioneers will host Elmira College for senior day at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m.
