Box Score Dallas, PA (April 5, 2014) – The Utica College men's lacrosse team combined to outscore host Misericordia 8-3 between the second and third quarters on its way to a 10-7 victory in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. Three different Pioneers scored two goals including seniors
Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and
Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy), as well as sophomore
Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy). Schoen also added an assist to help the Pioneers snap a three game slide as they improved to 5-5 overall on the season.
The Pioneers trailed 3-2 with 3:41 to go in the first half before exploding with seven of the game's next eight goals to gain a convincing 9-4 advantage with 8:56 to go in the fourth quarter.
Misericordia (4-6) scored three goals in the final 8:22 of the contest to put a scare into the Pioneers, but the comeback bid proved to be too late as UC came away with the 10-7 victory in regulation.
With the score knotted at 3-3 late in the second quarter, Baron netted his second goal of the day with just eight ticks left on the first half clock to give the Pioneers a 4-3 lead at the half. Utica faceoff man
Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) gave UC a two goal lead, 5-3, when he scored just 45 seconds into the second half and then the Pioneers rattled off three straight man-up goals in a span of 3:13 in the third quarter to push their lead to 8-4.
Freshman
Ross Cree (Akwesasne/Salmon River ) netted one goal and added one assist for the Pioneers, while
Liam Wheatley (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder) added the Pioneers final goal of the game, his second of the season, midway through the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Stevenson and long stick defender
Tom Byrne (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) each scooped up a game-high seven ground balls, while senior goalie
Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) stopped 12 shots in the victory for Utica.
Corey Thompson (Akwesasne/Salmon River) also chipped in with four ground balls for the visitors as the Pioneers earned a 36-27 advantage in the ground ball category. UC outshot the Cougars 43-32 to spoil senior day at Mangelsdorf Field.
Junior
Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC) netted one goal for Utica and remains in the team lead with 26 points this season (17 goals, nine assists). Senior

The Pioneers continue their three game road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Empire 8 Conference rival and nationally-ranked No. 11 Ithaca College to take on the Bombers at 4 p.m.
