Box Score 2 Utica, NY (May 7, 2014) – The Utica College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Oswego State Wednesday afternoon at the Utica College Baseball Field. The Pioneers took game one, 4-3, before falling in game two, 7-6. Sophomore
Matthew DeMartino (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) continued his hot bat with a four-hit day while junior pitcher
Stephen Szatko (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit Valley) recorded his first win of the season in game one.
Szatko relieved injured starter
Joshua Webb (Verona, NY/VVS) and threw four innings allowing just one run to earn the victory. Webb was hurt while warming up to start the fourth..
UC now holds a 9-21 overall record and needs just one win to tie the most in a season over the last eight years. Utica is right back on the diamond Thursday to wrap up its 2014 campaign against St. John Fisher. The Empire 8 twin bill is set to start at 2 p.m. at the UC Baseball Field.
The Lakers move their season mark to 21-13 overall with the split and return to action on Saturday for a pair versus RIT (1 p.m.).
Utica 4, Oswego 3 - Game OneThe visiting got on the board first with two runs on two hits and the help of two walks in their first at bat. Oswego's first run came on a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI single.
The Pioneers answered in the third as the offense posted four runs to take the lead, 4-2, and the eventual game one victory.
Junior
Ryan Watson (Deerfield, NY/Whitesboro) smacked a double to left center scoring freshman shortstop Mike Howard, who walked, and sophomore third baseman
Adam Pexton (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), who doubled down the left field line.
UC worked two more scores as junior
Vincent Burillo (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central ) knocked in Watson with a single and later scored off of a
Matthew DeMartino (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) base hit giving Utica the 4-2 edge.
Oswego added one more run in the fourth before UC pitcher
Stephen Szatko (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit Valley) retired the final 9-of-10 batters en route to his first win of the season.
Pexton, Burillo and DeMartino each added two hits in the game one win while Watson accounted for three of UC's four runs as he drove in two and scored another.
Oswego 7, Utica 6 - Game TwoUtica carried its momentum into game two and managed a 2-0 lead into the midway point. UC scored one run in the first and another in the bottom of the fourth.
The Laker bats woke up in the top of the fifth, however, as the visitors took its first lead in over ten innings with a six-run rally, taking a 6-2 lead. Oswego's seven hit inning earned them their first lead since the top of the first of game one.
The teams each scored one run in their next at bats as the scoreboard showed a 7-3 Laker lead headed into the bottom of the sixth.
The Pioneers managed to rally in the sixth with three scores on three hits to pull within one, 7-6, but fell short as Oswego earned the afternoon split.
Senior
Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) went 3-for-4 with one run scored while Pexton put together a 3-for-6 day with one double, stolen base, run scored and RBI.
Six Lakers each registered one hit in game one for six total while seven Lakers registered a multi-hit outing in the game two victory. Dan Karleski led Oswego with three hits in game two.
