Women's Soccer Hosts D'Youville for Home Opener

Utica, NY (9/9/14) – The Utica College women's soccer team looks to remain unbeaten as the Pioneers host D'Youville College Wednesday night at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The contest is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

WINNING STREAK: The Pioneers are 2-0-1 against D'Youville College dating back to 2011… UC has outscored the Spartans 7-4 all-time and their lone shut out came on Sept. 19, 2012 in a 1-0 victory.

UNBEATEN: Utica has opened up the season 3-0 while outscoring opponents 6-3 over the course of the first three games … Each game thus far has has come down to the wire as the Pioneers have won each game by just one goal… 2012 was the last time UC started the season undefeated as the Pioneers won the first four games, before falling to RPI 5-1.

STANDOUT SENIOR: Senior defender Maddisen Melley (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) is off to a tremendous start to the season as her three goals have been deciding factors in the past two contests … In 34 career games for the Pioneers she has five goals.

SOLID DEFENSE: Junior goalie Kelly Heimerle (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) has proven to be irreplaceable for the Pioneers … Her 286 minutes played, 23 saves and, three goals against have helped lift her team to a 3-0 start … Her loan shutout came against Clarkson University by the score of 1-0. 

FRESHMAN PHENOM: Keri Berkowitz (Racine, WI/Racine Saint Catherine's) came out of the gates firing as she has a team-leading five shots on goal and three assists … Her lone goal came against Keuka College, however she has tallied at least one point in each game so far.

LAST TIME AGAINST D'YOUVILLE: The Pioneers tied the Spartans last year, 2-2 … Samantha Matthews (Valley Falls, NY/Tamarac) scored in the opening minutes to give UC an early lead … A second half miscue by D'Youville let in an own goal, tying the game at two, and that proved to be the deciding factor.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS: D'Youville is 1-2-1 on the season and 0-2-1 on the road … The Spartans have been outscored 9-1 thus far and outshot by 61-31...  The Pioneers need to keep Tera Juda and Liz Lyons in check as they have been a part of every scoring opportunity for the Spartans … Juda has two goals and one assist on the season for five points, and Lyons has one goal and two assists.

BACK IN ACTION: After Wednesday's game, the Pioneers will host SUNY Potsdam on Saturday… Game time is set for 4 p.m.
