Peyton LaReaux (Utica, NY/T.R. Proctor) tallied a career-high six points on two goals and two assists while senior
Shane Ruffing (Rochester, NY/Westborough) added two goals of his own as the Utica College men's soccer team earned a 4-2 win over visiting SUNY Canton Tuesday night at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Ruffing netted two goals on the night and is now tied for the program's all-time record with 74 career points (32 goals, 10 assists). Ruffing needs just one more point to surpass Evan DuFault '07 as the College's all-time leading scorer. He now has nine goals this season. Raine Owens (Pine Plains, NY/Stissing Mt. ) added a career-high two assists.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 21
st minute when LaReaux netted his first of the night after a long pass from the defensive end from
Raine Owens (Pine Plains, NY/Stissing Mt. ). LaReaux collected the pass from Owens and chipped in his second goal of the season from 30 yards out to give the Pioneers the early one goal lead.
Just over six minutes later Ruffing netted his first goal of the night when he received a through ball from LaReaux and beat Canton goalie Patrick Anunziatta to hand the Pioneers an early 2-0 lead.
Canton got on the board in the 29
th minute when Nick Escalante tallied his fourth goal of the season to cut the Kangaroo deficit to one goal, 2-1.
Ruffing then gave UC the lead for good when he tallied his second goal of the night, again assisted by LaReaux, to put the Pioneers on top 3-1 at 36:18.
LaReaux got things going for the Pioneers in the second half when he collected a header pass from Owens and sent a bullet into the net from 30 yards out to put the home team on top by three goals, 4-1.
Canton added a late tally in the 75th minute, but it proved to be too late, as the Pioneers hung on for the two goal victory.
Utica outshot Canton 23-9 on the day and earned a 4-0 advantage in the corner kick category.
Utica's
Matthew Milograno (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) stopped four shots in between the pipes for the Pioneers. Anunziatta added 12 saves for the Roos.
Utica snapped a five game skid and improved to 5-11 overall on the year while Canton's record dropped to 4-12 overall.
Utica returns to action for its final home game of the regular season on Friday night when it hosts Stevens in Empire 8 Conference action at 4 p.m.
