Women's Hoops Earns Thrilling Comeback Win Over RPI

UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's basketball team came from behind to top visiting RPI 91-84 in non-conference action Thursday evening at the Harold T. Clark Athletic Center.  Six different Pioneers scored in double digits and Utica outscored the Engineers 30-17 in the final quarter to earn the victory. 
 
UC scored more than 90 points in a game for the first time since Dec. 3, 2009, when the Pioneers defeated Cazenovia 92-63.
 
UC jumped out to a 5-0 lead to open the game and led by as many as eight in the first quarter as it took a 28-21 lead after the first ten minutes.  RPI battled back in the second quarter, outscoring Utica 26-12 and taking a 47-40 lead into half time.  Utica was able to regain the lead for good with 3:40 remaining in regulation as sophomore Alaina Tripp (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah) put in a layup for two of her 11 points on the night.
 
Sophomore Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) collected a game-high 19 points in 25 minutes off the bench and added five rebounds to pace the Pioneers.  Junior Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West) had 16 points and six boards, while senior Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) netted 14 points, six rebounds, and added a team-high five assists.  Tripp and classmate Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) combined for points and ten rebounds, with Tripp grabbing a team-high three rebounds off the offensive glass.
 
Freshman Rachel Hunter (West Islip, NY/West Islip) had a career-best 14 points and added a team-best seven assists, while Maggie Tabone (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) also recorded baskets. Utica dominated down low as the Pioneers outscored RPI 58-30 in the paint. 
 
The Pioneers improve to 2-1 on the year.  They return to action Saturday as they travel across town to take on local rival, SUNY Polytechnic.  Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
