UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's basketball team returns from a three-week break Wednesday as it hosts Union College. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: UC rallied from a 16-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat visiting Morrisville 60-58 on Dec. 9... Senior guard
Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) led the Pioneers with 20 points and five rebounds while
Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) added 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals off the bench… The Pioneers trailed 51-35 with 8:34 to go in regulation before rattling off a 20-3 run in the next 7:37 to take the lead.
MICELI APPROACHING ANOTHER MILESTONE: Earlier this season, senior
Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) became just the 11th player in program history to score 1,000 career points, and one of six players to have 100 + career three pointers (138)… She needs seven 3-pointers to move into second place on the school's all-time 3-pointers made list.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Pioneers have been lights out at home this season, winning all four of their contests at the Harold T. Clark Gymnasium… UC has outscored its opponents 281-237 at home, including an 84-57 ledger in the fourth quarter on its home court.
HUNTER HONORED: Freshman
Rachel Hunter (West Islip, NY/West Islip) was named the Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Week after the Morrisville game… Hunter had four points while shooting .500 from the field (2-4) in nine minutes of action in the come-from-behind victory against the Mustangs… She added three rebounds and an assist to finish her stat line… Hunter currently ranks fifth on the team with an average of 5.9 points per contest… She is also second on the squad with 5.1 rebounds per game.
LEADING THE WAY: Miceli leads the team with 15.0 points per game… She has also added 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game… Sophomore
Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) is second on the squad with 12.3 points and 1.6 assists per game off the bench… She also has a team-high 19 steals on the season.
HELPING OUT: Junior
Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West) is third on the team with 8.4 points per game... She also leads the squad with 6.3 boards per game… Utica has three other players averaging over five points per game, including
Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) (6.6),
Rachel Hunter (West Islip, NY/West Islip) (5.0) and
Alaina Tripp (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah) (5.5)… Senior
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) has also dished out a team-best 1.8 assists per game.
SCOUTING UNION: The Dutchwomen are 5-1 overall and have won their last three… The only common opponent the two teams have played this year is Hamilton College… Union topped Hamilton 57-47, while the Pioneers fell to the Continentals 67-65… Union has four players averaging over 10 points a game, including Natalie Leone and Jenni Barra, who each have 12 or more points per game.
LOOKING AHEAD: UC will open up Empire 8 Conference play Tuesday as it travels to Alfred University… Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
