Pioneers Down Hartwick to Pick up First Conference Win

Oneonta, NY (3/28/15)- The Utica College women's lacrosse team picked up its first Empire 8 Conference win of the season as it downed host Hartwick College 18-7 on Saturday afternoon.  Senior Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) netted a career-high seven goals and added one assist to lead the way for the Pioneers.  Kane is now third all-time with 153 career points. 
 
Utica has now won four of its last five and improves to 5-3 on the year (1-1 Empire 8).  The Pioneers return to action Thursday as they travel to Keuka for a non-conference match up.  Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.  Hartwick drops to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in E8 play. 
 
Utica scored six goals in the first 3:18 of the contest and went on to hold a 13-3 advantage at the half.  Apart from her eight-point outing, Megan Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) also led the team with five ground balls.    Sophomore Rebecca Plunkett (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) tallied three goals, one assist, and collected a game-high seven draw controls.  Patricia Kane (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville), Tewasherake Barnes (Akwesasne, NY/Salmon River), and Brooke Miller (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) each had two goals, while Morgan DuPont (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) had two assists.  Melissa Koch (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) and Courtney Wheeler (Ava, NY/Rome Free Academy) each had a goal and an assist, while Briana Estabrook (Tully, NY/Tully ) had one assist.
 
Juniors Kells Casey (Sandwich, MA/Kimball Union Academy) and Erin Jacobson (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) split time in goal, while Casey picked up her fourth win of the year.  Hartwick was led by Emily Jweid, who had one goal and two assists on the afternoon.  Steph Luce made 13 saves in net for the Hawks.
