ROCHESTER, NY – The Utica College men's lacrosse team snapped a five game winning streak on the road Wednesday as the Pioneers lost to nationally-ranked No. 17 Nazareth College 17-1.
Utica's record moved to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8 Conference. Naz has now won six straight games and improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the Empire 8.
The Pioneers held the dangerous Golden Flyer offense to just three goals in the first quarter but the home team netted nine goals in the second quarter to take a convincing 12-0 lead at the half.
Utica's
Ryan Desveaux (Bowmanville, ONT/St. Stephen Catholic) netted the lone goal of the contest for the Pioneers in the third quarter and he was assisted by junior
Alex Finnegan (Bay Shore, NY/Islip). Desveaux currently ranks second on the team with 12 goals this season. Finnegan leads the Pioneers with nine assists.
Utica senior defender
Tom Byrne (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scooped up a team-best five ground balls and he also caused three turnovers. Byrne leads Utica and ranks eighth in the conference with an average of 5.0 ground balls per game this season.
UC senior goalie
Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) stopped a season-high 15 shots. Headed into the contest the Pioneers had allowed four goals or less in four of their last five outings.
Troy Haefele and Luke Wooters combined for eight goals and ten assists for the Golden Flyers.
Utica, which entered Wednesday's contest undefeated on the road, returns to action on Saturday when the Pioneers travel to Richard Stockton (4 p.m.).
