Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Pioneers and Wildcats Battle to 1-1 Draw

UTICA, NY- The Utica College women's soccer team fought to a 1-1 tie against cross-town rival, SUNY Poly Wednesday night at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  The Pioneers are now 4-0-1 against the Wildcats in the last five years.

Freshman Jenna Mazza (Frankfort, NY/Sauquoit Valley) put UC on top in the 30th minute with her team-leading third goal of the season.  Mazza took a pass from senior Maddisen Melley (Wappingers Falls, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) and fired a long shot from the left corner of the box that tucked just inside the far post, marking her second score in as many games. Mazza almost scored again just five minutes later as her volley sailed over a Wildcat defender and bounced off the cross bar.

SUNY Poly was able to net the equalizer in the 71st minute as the Wildcats were awarded a free kick from 45 yards out.  Defender Natalie Streifert fired a long, high shot that sunk just beneath the crossbar and over the head of Utica keeper Jamie Enders (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) for her first of the season.

The Pioneers had a number of chances in the extra time, including two headers that were sent just wide of the frame, but neither team could score the winner.

Enders finished with seven saves, while Angela Bartlett made five stops in net for the Wildcats.

UC (2-2-2) returns to action Saturday as it travels to SUNY Potsdam for a non-conference match up.  Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.  SUNY Poly will also be on the road on Saturday as it opens up NEAC play at Cazenovia.  Game time is set for 3 p.m.
