Canton, NY – The Utica College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision against host SUNY Canton on Wednesday night. Canton's Kyle Smith broke the scoreless tie with his third goal of the season, assisted by Demba Ba, to hand the Kangaroos a 1-0 lead (58:30) that they would not relinquish.
Utica's record moved to 2-11-1 on the year while Canton improved to 6-9-1 overall. Utica earned a 13-10 shot advantage on the day and added four second half corner kicks to keep the pressure on the home team.
The Pioneers threatened late, with a header on goal from
Matt Beljan (Bedminster, PA/Christopher Dock) and a corner kick opportunity - each with less than five minutes to go in regulation – but the Pioneer rally came up short as they dropped the one goal decision.
Marcel Dupuis (Hannacroix, NY/Greenville) led the Pioneers with three shots on goal on the afternoon, while
Owen Gillam (Bristol, CT/Bristol),
Dzenan Racic (Utica, NY/Proctor),
Nicolas Diaz (Commack, NY/Commack) and
Connor Herbst (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) each added one shot on goal for the Pioneers.
UC goalie
Matthew Milograno (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro), the reigning Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week, added one save on the afternoon.
Utica returns to Empire 8 Conference play on Saturday when the Pioneers host St. John Fisher College at 4 p.m. UC's two wins this season have come at the friendly confines of Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
