Big Third Quarter Lifts Utica over Potsdam

POTSDAM, NY- The Utica College women's basketball team used a 30-point third quarter to down host SUNY Potsdam 67-52 its the season-opener Tuesday evening. 
 
The Pioneers are now 4-1 to open the season in the last five years.  UC will look to carry this momentum into its home-opener Thursday against Oneonta.  Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
 
Utica found itself down 34-28 at the half, but the Pioneers came out of the locker room with a vengeance, outscoring the home team 30-4 in the third quarter.  The Bears did not score a point in the second half until 2:25 left in the third quarter. 
 
Junior Ashelyne Babb (Lynn, MA/Winthrop) led the way for UC with a game-high 18 points, while classmate Ashley Mayo (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) registered her first career double-double as she finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Babb also led the squad with five dishes and four steals in 36 minutes of action.
 
Sophomore Rachel Hunter (West Islip, NY/West Islip) totaled 15 points and sunk 7-of-8 from the free throw line, while juniors Alaina Tripp (Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah) and Amanda Henderson (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) combined for 11 points and 13 boards.  Maggie Tabone (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili), Alayna Cormier (Williamsburg, VA/Warhill), Nicolette Conkin (Los Altos, CA/Homestead), and Emily Pinckney (Canton, NY/Hugh C. Williams) also scored points for the Pioneers.
